A man accused of murdering a 70-year-old man in Hartlepool has appeared at the Old Bailey.
Terrence Carney was killed on Tees Street on Sunday, with counter-terrorism police investigating.
Moroccan national Ahmed Ali Alid, 44, appeared at London's Central Criminal Court charged with murder and the attempted murder of a second man.
No pleas were entered and he was remanded into custody for a future hearing on 27 October.
Mr Alid appeared via videolink from HMP Frankland in Durham and was escorted by four prison officers.
Speaking through an Arabic interpreter, he did not confirm his name or date of birth and told the court: "I am very ill, I cannot talk, I cannot speak."
Prosecutor Ben Lloyd said police were called to a house on Wharton Terrace in Hartlepool at about 05:15 BST on Sunday to reports of a fight.
One man, Javed Nouri, was found with "stab wounds", the court heard, with Mr Carney discovered on a nearby street a short time later by police.
"First aid was administered but he died at the scene," Mr Lloyd said.
He added: "Whilst investigations remain at an early stage, the police at this time consider the offending to have been motivated by terrorism."
The hearing was held in London because it is being handled under the Crown Prosecution Service's counter-terrorism protocol.
