Two divers had to pulled to safety after getting into difficulties in strong currents after one of them banged her head off North Tyneside.

Tynemouth Volunteer Life and the Cullercoats RNLI lifeboat were alerted by the HM Coastguard on Saturday and arrived within three minutes.

They found a middle-aged woman and another struggling to swim ashore in Browns Bay near Cullercoats harbour.

The woman had banged her head getting into the sea and was taken hospital.

A spokesman for Tynemouth Volunteer Life Brigade said: "The divers had got into difficulties after one of them, a middle-aged woman, had banged her head when entering the sea at the start of their dive.

"Although she had remained conscious throughout, the pair were unable to make it back to shore and therefore required rescuing.

"Once back on dry land, the woman was taken to hospital by ambulance as a precaution.

"Officers from Northumbria Police were also in attendance at this incident."
