A Tyneside Metro station has been given a makeover with hundreds of photographs from the local community.

Photographers from across the North East were asked to capture their favourite scenes from Tyne and Wear as part of a competition.

Now, nearly 200 photographs have been assembled to make a mural at Byker Metro station.

Designed in the shape of The Sage Gateshead, it includes pictures such as Tynemouth Priory and Sunderland's Winter Gardens.

All the photographs represent places people can visit by Metro.

The six most prominent photographs on the mural were chosen by members of the public.

Ed Bookless, from South Gosforth, was one of the winners with his photograph Reflections on the Tyne.

The 28-year-old said: "When I found out about the competition, I was keen to sign up as I'm extremely passionate about photography and I regularly use Metro to get out and about around the region.

"One of my favourite Metro destinations is the Newcastle Gateshead Quayside and on the day I heard about the competition, I went down there to take some photographs of the scene.

"I was very surprised when I found out I was one of the winners and it's so rewarding to feel I have contributed to this project."

Sharon Kelly, from Tyne and Wear Metro, said they were "overwhelmed" with the response from members of the public.
