Durham Wildlife Trust has received a £77,000 funding boost to improve three waterways around Tyneside and Wearside.
Cash from the SITA Trust will be spent on Herrington Burn in Sunderland, the River Don in South Tyneside and the Black Burn in Gateshead
The project aims to improve water quality and increase the number of species in the urban rivers.
Michael Rogers from the trust said water voles and otters would particularly benefit.
