Final Newcastle v Sunderland football disorder cases heard

The trouble flared despite a heavy police presence

The final batch of people charged following an outbreak of disorder at the Tyne-Wear football derby a year ago have been dealt with by the courts.

Trouble erupted outside St James' Park and in Newcastle city centre after Sunderland beat Newcastle United 3-0 in April 2013.

More than 100 people were arrested, and 93 of them later charged.

During a series of trials, 88 people admitted violent disorder or affray, two were convicted and three acquitted.

Their ages ranged from as young as 12 to 45 and the longest sentence imposed was 21 months.

One of the cases which attracted national interest was that of Newcastle fan Barry Rogerson, who was caught on camera punching a police horse.

The animal was uninjured and Rogerson was jailed for a year in October after admitting violent disorder.
