Four youths who were swept out to sea along with a man who tried to save them have been rescued off the Northumberland coast by lifeboat crews.

Two boys and two girls, aged about 14 to 16, were washed out to sea off Seahouses while bodyboarding, the RNLI said.

The five were treated in the harbour after the rescue at about 13:00 BST, the charity said.

They were described as cold and in shock and some had swallowed sea water.

Three of the boarders and the man were later taken to Wansbeck Hospital by ambulance.

A spokesman for the North East Ambulance Service said: "We received a call from the coastguard reporting five children being immersed in the sea at Beadnell and a search was being conducted.

"All five children were reported as being rescued by the coastguard and conveyed to Wansbeck casualty with non-life threatening symptoms."
