County Durham waste water plant to get £2m upgrade

  • Published

A £2m upgrade of a County Durham waste water treatment plant is due to start.

Northumbrian Water's Crookhall works in Consett will be refurbished to increase capacity and improve the quality of water discharged into Stockerley Burn.

Project manager Nigel Watts said flushing inappropriate items like fat down toilets and sinks increased costs.

"We spend around £400,000 every year sending items such as nappies, sanitary products and cleaning and baby wipes to landfill," he said.

Work is expected to be finished by January.
