Mr Goddard said he been planning to propose for about a year

A woman has agreed to marry her partner following an eye-catching proposal at Glastonbury Festival.

Jane Shannon said yes to Mark Goddard after he took her to the top of a viewing tower, while friends unfurled a huge "marry me" banner.

A wave of cheers echoed around the festival when the County Durham couple reached the bottom of the tower.

Ms Shannon, who is afraid of heights, said she had no idea the romantic gesture was about to happen.

The 45-year-old from Chester-le-Street said: "I was just looking out over the hill and I saw the sign.

"When I turned around, Mark was down on one knee."

Mr Goddard, 43, also from Chester-le-Street, said he had been planning the proposal for a year and bought the ring months ago.

The IT worker said he created the 11-metre banner at a friend's garage instead of going to work last week.
