A fire has broken out at the River Tyne's Swing Bridge.

It began at about 13:00 BST on a pontoon underneath the bridge. with two crews and a fire boat tackling the flames.

Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service said wooden staves had caught fire, although the precise cause remains unknown.

The Victorian bridge, which links Newcastle and Gateshead, opened in 1876.
