Newcastle hit-and-run victim dies after crash killed wife

A 79-year-old man has died after a hit-and-run crash in which his wife was killed in Newcastle.
The victim died after his 75-year-old wife died at the scene in Jesmond Road, when the pair were struck near the Punch Bowl pub, on Saturday.
The man was taken to hospital and has since died as a result of his injuries, police said.
A man, 22, held on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving has been released while investigations continue.
A 24-year-old man arrested on suspicion of arresting an offender also remains under investigation.
