Five teenagers have been arrested on suspicion of murder after a man died following a suspected assault.

The 43-year-old was found seriously injured in Wallsend, North Tyneside, just before 14:30 BST on Monday.

He died at the scene in St Hilda's Avenue, Northumbria Police said.

Three boys, one aged 14 and two 15-year-olds, arrested on Monday have been released under investigation. An 18-year-old man and a 16-year-old boy arrested overnight remain in custody.

Det Insp Louise Jenkins said although the investigation was in the early stages the force did not believe there was any "wider threat" to the public.

"Our officers remain in the area as they continue to follow several lines of inquiry and I'd encourage anybody with any concerns or information to get in touch," she said.

The family of the man who died are being supported by specially trained officers.
