A pop-up supermarket has opened in North Tyneside providing discounted items for those in need.

Residents can sign up for a £1 year-long membership, which will allow them to purchase up to 15 items for just £5.

The shop will be open every Thursday morning at St Paul's Community Partnership in George Street, Willington Quay.

North Tyneside councillor Karen Clark said it "gives residents the choice to select the items they want".

It is one of five, external "social supermarkets" that has opened up in the borough since January, and funding has come from the Labour-run council's Community Food Grant.

"We know it's more important than ever to ensure everyone has access to affordable food," she added.

"There's no referral needed, residents can access the support as and when they choose."

A spokesperson for St Paul's Community Partnership said "all are welcome."

"We will also be offering fridge and freezer goods within the next few weeks to help family budgets stretch that little bit further," they added.
