Highland cattle to preserve County Durham bog

  • Published

Three Highland cattle are being used to conserve a wetland habitat in County Durham.

Hope, Betty and Kate will graze on Wanister Bog, near Chester-le-Street, which is part of the Waldridge Fell Site of Special Scientific Interest.

It has been drying out and is in danger of losing some of its plants.

The weight of the cattle and their grazing breaks up grass, allowing the area to become wetter.

The cows will graze on the bog over the winter.
