Durham Cathedral's war shelter becomes chapel

The new chapel was dedicated by the Bishop of Jarrow

A former wartime shelter at Durham Cathedral has become a new chapel.

The undercroft, which served as a shelter for choristers during World War II, is now the Chapel of the Holy Cross and was dedicated by Bishop Mark Bryant, Bishop of Jarrow.

It is available for groups and individuals who want a quiet place for reflection and prayer.

Former chorister George Hetherington, who slept in the shelter more than 60 years ago, attended the dedication.

He said: "It was especially moving to be able to receive communion from the very spot where I had my sleeping bag all those years ago."
