Inquiries have begun after suspected bones were found on a Sunderland beach.

Police were called to Seaburn beach near Queen's Parade just before 13:30 GMT after the discovery by a member of the public.

Northumbria Police said it had cordoned off the area while the "suspected remains" were recovered.

A spokesperson added there would be an "increased police presence" in the area while specialist officers were at work.
