Wiltshire Council plans £30m in extra cuts

Wiltshire Council is planning an extra £30m in cuts next year, it has been announced.

The authority had pencilled in £40m in cuts next year, but after new information from central government that figure has now gone up to £70m.

Following Chancellor George Osborne's Comprehensive Spending Review last month Wiltshire Council said it aimed to save £122m in four years.

An extra £30m of that total will now have to be made in 2011/12.

'Worst case scenario'

Council finance member Fleur De Rhe-Philipe said extra job losses were "not the plan at the moment".

She added: "We may have to slow down our ambitious investment programme.

"Totally changing our collection and disposal of waste - things like that."

A council spokeswoman said precise figures would not be known before December, but they were working on the "worst case scenario".

The Conservative-run council has said it aims to close 240 managerial posts by next April.
