CCTV credited for Swindon's Railway Village clean up

The introduction of CCTV cameras and a scheme for residents to report fly-tipping has been credited for cleaning up Swindon's Railway Village.

Old mattresses, furniture and ironing boards were among the items regularly dumped at the roadside.

A borough council spokesman said the area had been blighted by "selfish and idle" individuals.

"They couldn't be bothered to use a household recycling centre less than two miles away," he said.

"The Railway Village area is an important part of the town's heritage.

"I'm delighted the amount of rubbish left has fallen.

"Residents have commented on a noticeable improvement in their surroundings with even dog fouling being reduced," the borough council spokesman added.
