Recycling 'milestone' is reached in Wiltshire

  • Published

One million tonnes of household waste have been saved from landfill in Wiltshire, figures show.

A Wiltshire Council spokesman said the figure was a "recycling milestone" and thanked local residents.

The authority signed a contract with Hills Waste Solutions in 1996 and it took until 2007 for the first 500,000 tonnes to be diverted from landfill.

The council spokesman said recycling facilities had "expanded hugely" since then.

"The aim is to always appropriately dispose of the waste collected sending as much as possible for recycling rather than landfill," he said.
