Work is set to start on the first phase of the £330m Union Square development in Swindon town centre.

An 850-space car park and a block of 45 apartments is to be built on the site of the former central police station.

Developers Muse were granted planning permission for the scheme by Swindon Borough Council in November 2011.

Chris Hitchings, of economic development company Forward Swindon, said that work beginning on the site was "welcome news".
