A £1.4m revamp of the accident and emergency department at Swindon's Great Western Hospital will be complete by Christmas, the hospital has confirmed.

The refurbishment of the department was due to be suspended over the "busy winter period" and begin again in May.

However, a hospital spokeswoman said: "It is going so well we've decided to continue work."

Work includes a complete redesign of the department as well as a new dedicated children's unit.

According to the hospital, the major construction work has now been completed including the new children's unit, the main reception and new staff working area.

"We are really pleased with progress so far, everything is going to plan," said the spokeswoman.

"And we are confident that the remaining work including decorating and finishing touches will leave the department looking state-of-the-art."

Other improvements include a refurbishment of the adults' waiting area with new seating, a TV screen and refreshments.
