The man was driving a Toyota Corolla when it collided with a Ford Fiesta on the westbound carriageway.
The cars collided on the stretch between Membury Services and junction 15 just after 23:00 GMT on Sunday.

The force is appealing for witnesses or drivers with dashcam footage to come forward.
In a statement, it said its thoughts were with the man's family and friends at "this incredibly difficult time".

On Monday afternoon it tweeted the road had reopened "following the earlier serious collision".
At the time of the post it said there were "just under two miles of slow moving traffic approaching" junction 14.
