A man in his 40s has died after being hit by a car on a busy stretch of motorway, Wiltshire Police have said.

The M4 westbound between J17 (Chippenham) and J18 (Bath) was closed since just before 01:00 GMT on Monday.

National Highways said diversions were in place along the A350, A420 and A46.

Queues on the M4 reached more than four miles in length, with delays of more than an hour to traffic. All lanes reopened just before 15:00 GMT, with traffic returning to normal.
