A teenage boy has died in an accident which happened when the Vauxhall Astra he was in was being pursued by police.

The incident happened on the Commonhead roundabout in Swindon, near Junction 15 of the M4, at about 23.00 GMT on Tuesday.

Three other occupants of the Astra sustained minor injuries and were arrested.

Wiltshire Police says it has referred itself to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC).

The force said the boy died at the scene but formal identification has not yet taken place.

It added in a statement: "Following initial enquiries, a male in his 20s was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

"Two other individuals, both female and in their 20s, were arrested on suspicion of taking a vehicle without consent.

"All three remain in custody at this time."

Wiltshire Police said the A419 southbound from the Commonhead roundabout to the M4 remains closed along with the M4 eastbound exit slip road for J15.

"These will likely be closed for much of the day so we would ask all motorists to use alternative routes where possible," the force added.
