The next phase of refurbishment on a Grade II-listed town hall is under way with work now started on its roof.

Trowbridge Town Hall's refurbishment is part of a £16m investment in the town from the government's Future High Streets Fund.

The main contractor, Beard, said it is on track to complete work on the building in the summer of 2025.

When work is completed the property will become a creative and cultural hub and live music venue for the town.

The existing battens and roof tiles have been taken off and there has been temporary weather proofing put on.

The removal of a suspended ceiling has revealed the original roof trusses and a vaulted ceiling.

The team working on the building has also been demolishing old offices and internal walls so the hall can be fully opened up.

Specialist stonemasons have begun the restoration to preserve the external stonework.

Beard said that work has been progressing very well, with Councillor Phil Alford, Wiltshire Council's Cabinet Member for Strategic Assets adding the authority is "very pleased with the progress being made" and the care being taken to protect the hall's historic features.

"It's great to see the Town Hall shaping up to be once again the landmark cultural venue in the centre of Trowbridge," Mr Alford added.

Trowbridge Town Hall Trust, which uses the building, will be given a 125-year lease once the work has finished.

As a result of lots of work in the town centre, there have been road closures and changes to bus stops, including roadworks at Manver Street.

There will be a road closure on Silver Street on 18 January, from 19:00 GMT until midnight.
