A teenager who was arrested after a police officer was seriously injured in an incident involving an electric bike has been released on bail.

The incident took place at a junction on Faringdon Road in Swindon at about 23:20 GMT on Saturday.

The 17-year-old was arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm and possession of an offensive weapon.

This suspect has now been released on bail pending further enquiries.

The injured officer, a police constable, remains in hospital.

Chief Constable Catherine Roper said:: "Such incidents, whilst thankfully rare, are profoundly shocking and I am aware that this feeling is echoed throughout the Wiltshire Police family and our communities."

"In addition to the officer himself, I would like to pay tribute to the professional and swift actions of colleagues, and the members of the public who also assisted, so that the suspect was rapidly detained and the officer was given immediate care for his injuries.

"Our investigation into the circumstances continues, and every effort is being made to ensure justice is served," Ms Roper added.

Detectives are appealing for witnesses or anyone with dashcam footage of the incident to come forward.
