A woman died in a crash between a lorry and a car on the main road near Stonehenge.
The A303 is closed in both directions between Longbarrow and Countess roundabouts following the collision just after 10:00 GMT.
The female driver of the car, a woman in her 60s from Bath, died at the scene.
Her next of kin has been informed and are being supported by a specialist trained officer, police said.
The driver of the HGV was uninjured.
A police spokesman said investigations were "anticipated to last beyond the afternoon and evening peak", and the road continues to be closed.
National Highways is advising drivers to plan ahead and consider alternative routes where possible.
Eastbound traffic is currently being diverted via the A360, B3086 and A345 to rejoin the A303 at Countess roundabout. The westbound diversion is operating in reverse, Wiltshire Police said.
