The hangar is in urgent need of repair after being damaged in Storm Isha

An historic World War One hangar that was badly damaged in a storm will be restored.

Planning permission has been given to refurbish hangar three on the Grade II*-listed Old Sarum Airfield in Wiltshire.

The hangar, built in 1918, was deemed 'at risk' in 2020 following a previous partial roof collapse, and was damaged in Storm Isha in January.

Wiltshire Council approved the proposal for the £3m works on 11 March.

The project includes the reroofing the hangar and rebuilding some walls.

According to the council's decision notice, granting the restoration does not depend on the approval of a separate application to build 315 homes on the airfield.

The hanger is one of seven built at Old Sarum, which at first was used as a training depot station for day bombing raids, but by 1919 was also used by the School of Army Co-Operation.
