Tockwith waste fire firm in administration

At its height nearly 30 firefighters, five engines and the aerial ladder platform were at the scene

More than 30 jobs have been lost at a North Yorkshire waste management firm which has gone into administration following a major fire.

The fire destroyed BCB Environmental Management Ltd's premises in Marston Moor Business Park, Tockwith, earlier this month.

The firm made 33 of its 37 staff redundant before appointing Sheffield's P&A Partnership as administrators.

The remaining staff are working on a clean-up operation at the site.

The Tockwith plant treated and disposed of hazardous and non-hazardous industrial waste.

In a statement the administrators said: "On 11 August 2010 the company's trading premises were destroyed by a fire causing an environmental risk to the surrounding areas.

"The Environment Agency served an Anti Pollution Works Notice on the company on 16 August 2010. This required certain works to be undertaken to help safeguard the neighbouring Fleet Beck. This work is ongoing in close liaison with the Environment Agency.

"Prior to the joint administrators' appointment, the company had laid off 33 of its 37 staff. These employees were formally made redundant upon the joint administrators' appointment."

The Health and Safety Executive has started an investigation into the fire.
