Revised Malton road plan to go on show in town

Plans for a multimillion-pound alteration to a trunk road junction and improvements to the centre of a North Yorkshire town are to go on display.

Officials at North Yorkshire County Council and Ryedale District Council have revised their plans for the centre of Malton and an exhibition is to open.

The show will also reveal details of the proposed £5.6m improvement of the A64 Brambling Fields junction.

Consultations on the plans will run until 18 April.

The initial consultation was planned for May 2010, but was delayed after concerns about draft proposals for Railway Street and Norton Road were raised.

Officials at the county council said some changes to the town centre road network were "essential to make sure that through traffic avoids the congested town centre".

They said they had designed and tested alternative approaches that remove through-traffic while still allowing movements between Malton and Norton for other traffic.

County councillor Gareth Dadd, who is responsible for highways, said: "Improving traffic flow as well as air quality and conditions for pedestrians has long been a priority for North Yorkshire County Council and its district council partners.

"We will welcome views from residents and businesses during the consultation to ensure that Malton and Norton get the improvements that best meet the needs of the community as a whole."

The exhibition is at the Green Man Hotel, Market Place, Malton, from 1300 to 1930 GMT on Friday and from 0900 to 1300 GMT on Saturday.
