York City Council plans to raise council tax by 2.9%

Plans to raise council tax in York have been approved in a cabinet meeting at the city council.

Councillors approved a raise of 2.9% on Tuesday evening after the Labour-controlled authority was told it would need to make savings totalling £22m.

It has to find savings of £12m in 2012/13 and an additional £10m in 2013/14 to balance the budget.

It would mean an extra £39.37 a year for an average band D property. A final decision will be made next week.

Earlier this week, the North Yorkshire Police Authority agreed to freeze its council tax precept to reduce the burden on residents and the local community.
