Missing Megan Roberts: Mother says 'no-one to blame'

The mother of a missing student has said the disappearance of her daughter appears to be the result of "a tragic run of events with no-one to blame".

Megan Roberts, 20, from Wetherby, West Yorkshire, was last seen after a night out with friends in York on 23 January.

North Yorkshire Police says it is likely Miss Roberts entered the River Ouse while "affected by alcohol".

Jackie Roberts said she remained "hopeful" until it was certain her daughter had ended up in the river.

"We've been given as much information as the police can give us and all evidence does point towards this being a tragic run of events with no-one to blame," Mrs Roberts said in a message on Facebook.

'Beautiful daughter'

The student, who is studying at York St John University, was reported missing by her mother on 27 January after a friend raised concerns that she had not been seen since the previous Thursday.

Miss Roberts was seen on CCTV at 02:20 GMT with a group of people near Lendal Bridge, which crosses the River Ouse.

Searches of the river and its banks have been taking place since Tuesday. Police have also used specialist sonar equipment to try and locate the student.

Mrs Roberts said: "Until we know for certain, we all have hope, but whatever the outcome, we are all carrying Megan in our hearts.

"This is a very difficult time and, as a family, we will always be thankful for everyone's love and support and caring thoughts for my beautiful daughter."
