The mother of a student who drowned in the River Ouse in York two years ago has called for improved lighting near the water.

Megan Roberts, 20, a fine art student at York St John University, disappeared after a night out drinking with friends two years ago.

Her family and friends met at the river to release balloons and pay tribute to Megan two years after her death.

Megan's mother, Jackie Roberts, said river safety in York was "a big issue".

Megan, from Wetherby in West Yorkshire, was last seen on CCTV near Lendal Bridge over the River Ouse at 02:20 GMT on 23 January 2014.

Her body was found six weeks later near the Ship Inn at Acaster Malbis.

Jackie Roberts said: "It's a very confusing area and [needs] improved lighting, not just here but anywhere in York where there are open steps. It's so easy to fall in. It's a big issue."

In May, a coroner recorded open verdicts on the deaths of Megan and Ben Clarkson, who both died after falling into rivers in York.
