A £5m flood defence scheme has been approved by councillors.
Hundreds of properties in Filey were affected by flooding in 2002 and 2007.
The plans include creating six embankments up to 1.5m (4ft 9in) high in the north west of the town, new drainage channels and three water storage areas.
Councillor Mike Cockerill said it was "a major step in the right direction". The work is due to start in 2017 and take up to 12 months to complete.
A Scarborough Borough Council report, external said the scheme was designed to cope with a one-in-100 year flood event.
