About 100 cars were left temporarily stranded on the A171 in North Yorkshire on Thursday evening after heavy snow fell in the area, police said.

Motorists were urged to avoid travelling due to treacherous driving conditions, and the road was closed.

The incident was centred around the Flask/Fylingdales area between Whitby and Scarborough, the force added.

Motorists were also advised to avoid travelling on the A169 between Pickering and Whitby.
