A multimillion-pound revamp of a military town has been given the go-ahead, it has been announced.

Plans to transform Catterick Garrison's town centre in North Yorkshire were approved during a meeting on Thursday.

The scheme, which will see land around Shute Road redeveloped, includes a new town square and a building for small businesses and community groups.

It is hoped it will be completed by June 2025 and bring "new opportunities and facilities" to residents.

Catterick Garrison is the largest British Army garrison with a population of about 13,000.

In planning document submitted, developers said the new community building would house offices for small businesses and include space for community groups and food retail.

Work would also include improvements to play areas, footpaths and cycleways.

The majority of the funding for the project has come from levelling up grants with the total cost estimated to be £21m.

Richmond (Yorks) Area Constituency Planning Committee chairman, Councillor David Webster, said: "This scheme will see significant improvements to the centre of Catterick Garrison as well as contribute to our work to reduce carbon emissions through the use of sustainable design and renewable energy."

Councillor Kevin Foster added: "[The redevelopment] will bring new opportunities and facilities for the many people who live at Catterick Garrison - both civilians and members of the military."
