A 78-year-old pedestrian has been left in critical condition after being hit by a car in Northallerton which failed to stop at the scene.
Police said a small black hatchback is believed to have hit the man on the High Street at around 20:15 GMT on Tuesday.
The injured man remains in hospital.
A second crash took place later and resulted in the arrest of four people in relation to the incident on the High Street, police said.
The second crash happened on Scholla Lane and involved a vehicle which had "flipped into a field", a spokesperson for the force said.
The two occupants were arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving and failing to stop in connection to the earlier collision.
Both have been released under investigation.
A further man and a woman were later arrested and remain in custody.
