York cheese shop owner Jordan Thomson said three burglaries in two weeks had left him "shocked and scared"

Criminals who target businesses are being targeted in a four-day campaign by North Yorkshire Police.

Extra police resources will be used to tackle those who steal from shops and other businesses in Scarborough, Northallerton and York from Monday.

The operation follows a spate of burglaries on businesses including a cheese shop in York, which was broken into three times in two weeks.

Police said it would "deter, disrupt and detain persistent offenders".

Det Insp Ryan Chapman, of North Yorkshire Police, said: "The fact that these days are being held across York and North Yorkshire shows how seriously we take this type of crime.

"They also give us an opportunity to highlight the work we are doing to tackle the issue."

He said the campaign days would not be "one-offs" and would be followed by local police teams continuing to work closely with businesses to "reduce the impact of this type of crime".
