Twenty 'killed by one-punch attacks' in Northern Ireland

The campaign warns death or serious injury can be caused by one punch

Police are reminding members of the public in the run-up to New Year celebrations of their One Punch campaign.

The campaign, which has been running during December, highlights the risks of getting involved in an argument or fight which could lead to serious injury or death.

PSNI figures show 20 people have died of such attacks since 2004.

Police said many more people had been seriously injured.

Detective Chief Inspector Karen Baxter said: "December is traditionally a busy month for local nightclubs and restaurants with revellers celebrating the festivities, however, one punch attacks can, and do, happen.

"Unfortunately, the majority of these incidents are fuelled by excessive alcohol and can have a devastating impact on the victim and their family.

"In such cases the offender will likely face a murder or manslaughter charge and have a criminal record for the rest of their life. This type of conviction can impose significant restrictions on an individual's future.

"Our message is to enjoy your night out, but more importantly - stay safe."
