Carl Frampton honoured at civic reception in Belfast

Northern Ireland's new world champion boxer Carl Frampton has been honoured at a civic reception in his native Belfast.

It was organised after his victory over Kiko Martinez on Saturday night, giving the Belfast boxer the IBF super-bantamweight world title.

Frampton, from Tiger's Bay in the north of the city, won unanimously on points.

Hundreds of fans gathered for the public reception at Belfast City Hall.

The ceremony was shown on a big screen in the grounds of the building.

'Civic pride'

Speaking as she prepared to host the event, Lord Mayor of Belfast Nichola Mallon paid tribute to the boxer.

"It put the city on such a high, such a buzz, and when you were speaking to people after the fight they were saying how proud they were of Carl, but also how proud they are of being from Belfast," she said.

"So in terms of our civic pride, it's done wonders for our city and we have to thank Carl for that.

"He's a wonderful role model, both inside the ring and out," she added.
