Drink-driving: PSNI stopped motorists 'too drunk to stand'

Police have announced a Christmas crackdown on drink-driving, saying some of those they arrested last year were so drunk they could barely stand.

Officers made an average of seven arrests a day during the festive period last year in Northern Ireland.

The oldest to be detained was 78 and the youngest drove illegally at 15.

ACC Alan Todd said: "It just beggars belief that some people still insist on attempting to drive after drinking. The consequences could be catastrophic."

During the Christmas period last year, a total of 258 people were detected drink-driving by the Police Service of Northern Ireland.

The motorist with the highest alcohol reading was more than four times the legal limit

ACC Todd said: "The only right decision is to leave the car or motorbike at home if you're drinking.

"It only takes one drink to impair your decision-making ability."
