Newry burglary: Three men granted bail after iron bar attack

Three men aged 27, 30 and 33 charged with involvement in an aggravated burglary in Newry have been granted bail.

They were charged after a man was attacked with baseball bats and an iron bar during the incident at a house in Springfarm Heights. on Tuesday morning.

The men were arrested after a car crashed on the southbound carriageway of the A1.

They appeared at Newry Magistrates' Court on Wednesday, via videolink.

The men were charged with a number of offences including aggravated burglary and driving-related offences.

Police said the occupant of the house sustained cuts and bruising as a result of the incident.

Police opposed bail due to what they said was the severity of the alleged offences, that the offences appear to have been unprovoked and due to the proximity each defendant lives to the injured party.

It was also confirmed that police were looking for a fourth person in connection with the incident.

Granting bail to each defendant, District Judge Eamonn King said that each man must not consume alcohol or drugs or enter licenced premises and submit to field tests.

He added that they must have no contact with each other, the injured party or witnesses, that they must reside at addresses approved by the police and that they must adhere to a curfew.

The three men are due to appear in court again on 21 December.
