NI weather: Met Office issues wind warning with heavy rain also forecast

Wind and heavy rain are forecast, which could cause difficult driving conditions

A severe weather warning for wind is in place in Northern Ireland until the early hours of Friday.

The alert brings with it strong winds and potential disruption to transport and infrastructure.

There are reports of fallen trees in McKinstry Road, near Lisburn, and Royal Oak Road, near Enniskillen.

The Royal Oak Road, between Donagh Road Village and Kilronan Road, is expected to remain closed overnight.

The Met Office warning began at 15:00 GMT on Thursday afternoon and lasts until 03:00 on Friday.

The organisation has warned of widespread gusts up to 80km/h (50 mph), with gusts up to 115km/h (70 mph) expected in exposed coasts and hills.

Some heavy and blustery showers are also forecast, which could cause difficult driving conditions.

Large coastal waves could also bring some damage and disruption.

Met Éireann has warned of possible power outages, travel disruption, and downed trees.

A status orange warning for wind - the second highest level - has been issued for County Donegal.
