A man has escaped injury after a petrol bomb attack on a house in County Down in which his two pet dogs were killed.

Emergency services received reports of a fire at a house at Dunville Park in Holywood at about 03:30 GMT on Tuesday.

The fire, which police are treating as arson, was extinguished by the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service.

Police have appealed for anyone with information, or anyone who may have doorbell footage of the incident, to come forward.

"The resident of the property thankfully escaped without injury; however extensive damage was caused and his two pet dogs sadly died in the blaze," Det Sgt Westbury said.

It is understood detectives are following a number of lines of enquiry.
