PSNI Chief Constable Jon Boutcher has paid tribute to a senior police officer's "tremendous and selfless courage" one year after he was badly wounded in a New IRA murder attempt.

Det Ch Insp John Caldwell has still not returned to duty.

He was shot in front of his son as he packed up after coaching a youth football team in Omagh, County Tyrone.

To date, 36 people have been arrested and 14 people have been charged in connection with the attack.

In a statement marking the anniversary, Mr Boutcher said the police will continue to pursue all those involved.

It is believed the New IRA mounted the ambush with the help of an organised crime gang.

DCI Caldwell, who was off-duty, was hit multiple times at close range by two gunmen.

Caldwell 'continuing recovery journey'

Mr Boutcher said: "This despicable attack took place among terrified children and parents and, distressingly, in front of John's young son.

"I would like to, first of all, acknowledge John's tremendous and selfless courage.

"The high esteem in which he is held by colleagues and friends speaks volumes.

"My thoughts, and that of the entire service, are with John and his family, as he continues his recovery journey."

He added those responsible for "this most vicious act" have nothing to offer the community.

Mr Boutcher's statement concluded: "I know that the support received from the public has been tremendous and, for this, we extend a heartfelt thanks."
