Lobby group calls for A5 go-ahead

Londonderry lobby group 'Save the A5' says the road project must go ahead

A Londonderry lobby group, opposed to the postponement of the A5 road scheme, has called on politicians to press ahead with the project.

The dual carriageway between Derry and Aughnacloy was put on hold, after the Irish government pulled its share of the £800 million pound bill.

Around 15 people attended a public meeting in Derry last night held by lobby group 'Save the A5'.

Both the SDLP and Sinn Fein attended.

The chairman of 'Save the A5', Cormac Duffy, said he was concerned that people felt the scheme was "a beaten docket".

"If Stormont takes this money away from the west it won't be spent in the west. It won't be used on the A6 project, it won't be spent on the railway. It will simply be gone," he said.
