The Liberal Democrat deputy leader said the priority in the Budget should be to raise personal tax allowances, but not cut the 50p tax rate.

Simon Hughes told Andrew Neil his party wanted the "normal family" to have more in their pockets.

He said: "That is why we are making the case to go further and faster lifting the personal allowance up to £10,000."

And he hinted there could changes to come on the bill to change health services in England, when he said: "You will see a bill that will protect and defend the NHS which was a Liberal idea in the first place."

He spoke after Liam Fox's interview with Andrew Neil
