Peter Hain welcomes Labour victories in Wales

Shadow Welsh Secretary Peter Hain has welcomed news that Welsh Labour is performing strongly in the local elections.

The party regained Blaenau Gwent, Bridgend, Merthyr Tydfil and Newport, and were hoping to oust the Plaid Cymru-led administration in Caerphilly.

Mr Hain described it as a "cracking night" and said that it was a vote of confidence in Ed Miliband.

Some 1,200 seats are being contested in 21 of the 22 unitary local authorities.
