Universal credits and changes to benefit claims debate

The row over the new universal credits - with a government bid to simplify benefits - saw Welfare Secretary Iain Duncan Smith face questions from MPs in the Commons.

He faced Conservative Jane Ellison, Labour's Dave Anderson, shadow work and pensions secretary Liam Byrne, and Labour's Cathy Jamieson.

Ministers called it the most "radical redesign" of the system in the history of the welfare state, but there are fears about how the scheme will work and whether it could harm the most vulnerable, with a move to more online claims.
