Economic green shoots: Leadsom, Myners and Portes

A Conservative MP said the government was "trying to get out of the worst crisis ever" and there was a long way to go for the UK economy to recover.

Andrea Leadsom, who sits on the Treasury Select Committee, said "we don't want to be too over optimistic" as she was asked about the former PM Sir John Major using the 'green shoots' phrase.

Labour's former City Minister Lord Myners said the economy was flat lining and "very unwell" outside South East England.

The economist Jonathan Portes, from the National Institute of Economic and Social Research, claimed there had been "two lost years" for the UK economy as he clashed with the Tory MP over the deficit figures.
