Press regulation: Charlotte Harris and Neil Wallis

Lawyer Charlotte Harris called for an independent press regulator where publishers had to sign up to replace what she called the "self-serving job for the boys self-regulation", but said it would not be state regulation.

But former newspaper editor Neil Wallis said there were 40 existing statutes to cover newspaper journalists, which included some of the powers Ms Harris and others were calling for.

Former Press Complaints Commission chairman Sir Christopher Meyer said "we did a hell of a lot" when asked to explain how the body had helped to regulate the press. He said that statutory regulation was not the answer and would not have dealt with phone hacking.
